originality gmnIt’s been a while and I trust all you gospel artiste out there are working hard at promoting your music and making excellent music as well. There is something I need share with you. I call it ORIGINALITY in music and beats. But before I get into what I really want to talk about, I would like to define the word ORIGINAL. By the English Thesaurus, it is defined as something unique, first, innovative, creative, unprecedented, new, special, genuine, and inventive and so on. It means that for something to be tagged or called original it is something unique, first and for something to be unique and first, then a lot of hard work would have been applied to make it stand out. Sadly, there is an increase in artiste “obtaining”, “copying” other artiste’s beats and music style and then trying to put in your own “jara” to make it sound different. Stop that.

It is not pleasant to the ears to hear a secular music we know is filled with absolute nonsense and allowing me to use the phrase that the gospel artiste by thinking that he/she can “play on our intelligence” adds some ‘christianese’ language and so we are to accept it as gospel or an artiste uses a beat that is so dry and without anointing because they cannot stay in God’s presence long enough to search out quality and inspired music in their spirits and so the songs cannot motivate the most spiritual person to worship God and lets not mention a new believer. Also an artiste needs to be original for the following reasons.

1. It may not sell. Not unless the artiste is truly wicked and won’t feel any remorse using someone else’s hard work to make a name for themselves.

2. It would make a mockery of the artiste’s ingenuity or the lack thereof.

3. It would also make a mockery of the genre the artiste is representing.

Now truth is we have different categories of gospel artistes and this cuts across all genres as well.

There are some singers who have absolutely no skill in writing songs or beats or whatever. If you are in that category, then get a good lyricist and a good producer that would help showcase your voice and brand you that way. Sometimes you get to write a song along a particular focus or help drop a line when a song is being written, that is just fine.

There are also singers, who have the songs in their head and have an idea of how they feel it should sound, (check my phrase, “they feel”) but 1Thess 5:23 says that we are spirits, we have a soul and we live in a body. Hmmm….teaching for another time.  Then these ‘feeling Christians’ get into the studio and they do not allow the producer influence their work to make it attractive to the ears and to the pocket. I have had the displeasure listening to music like that and I listened to sometime ago and honestly my mouth dropped open! Selah. Before I continue, I must stress the fact that the gospel music industry also needs anointing producers to produce anointed songs. If the producer is jack of all trade which means that he does both gospel and secular music, hmmm…. Be careful so that in everyone’s best intentions, the core purpose for the song is not lost or abused. I totally understand that the need for more anointed and skilled, intelligent and knowledgeable gospel producers is on the increase in this industry and I pray that they begin to show up in Jesus name.

Then we have the multi-talented singers who have the gift of both song writing and great singing. Whilst I am truly appreciative of the fact that you have the gift of excellent penmanship like King David, BE ORIGINAL!

I watched on YouTube some days ago with sadness a well-known and respected gospel artiste do a fusion of different types of “another man’s work” and fuse it into one.. The result….tasteless.

Ladies and gentlemen, music is food to the soul. It has a smell and a taste. Let me give an illustration. If you want to serve a meal to a noble man, you don’t use old or out-dated or expired ingredients to make the meal. You take your time, go to the market, search out the best out of all the ingredients you want to use, You do not mind the price because you know that the noble man would pay you handsomely, then you take it to the kitchen and spend time on your feet…sometimes hours just to make a simple meal. You all this because you know that once the noble man approves of you, you would be courted by the most influential in the society.

Music is truly very important to God for Him to have singers always before him in worship, and then you must know that He values heartfelt, quality worship. I personally believe that a good gospel song should be borne out of an experience in God’s presence because only then can it lead people to God’s presence. When you get a revelation from God and you share it with someone, it makes the person closer to God. So I beseech you gospel ministers, artiste and singers that you should spend quality time in God’s presence. Let him break you and make you into an instrument of worship that offers a sacrifice of worship and praise that is pleasing and acceptable before God.

As a gospel artiste, we serve music to God who is our noble man. That is why worship or talking about God or singing about him has to come from an experience with Him…He takes you through a journey and when you are done, you write and you relate it in a song, it makes so much difference in the life of the hearer because the truth is the songs we sing are not for our listening pleasure. They are meant to help someone find God one way or another. Be ORIGINAL…. People would pay attention to something that has not been heard anywhere before…. learn to stay in God’s presence till you leave with something tangible that it would be a blessing to someone else. Every psalm David wrote was a direct reflection of His relationship with God. Let your music reflect that too. Let it be that your music makes you invincible that all people see is the word that God wants them to hear and know and have a revelation of.

I know you may be thinking that to get there would cost you.. Remember God said in  2Cor 9:8-10 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:  (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remains for ever. Now he that ministers seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness

If God called you to this ministry, then He has a financial plan for you. It is your responsibility to search it out.  Pro 20:27  The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly………..… Be ORIGINAL.

  1. You were totally on point with your review. Its important someone talked about the issue of originality and ability to communicate God's power thru music. Like it or not, believe it or not, you must spend time with God if you call yourself a Gospel artist. Cos you can't possibly communicate God's mind if you don't even know it. Enough of the flippancy. Its not a business! This is Ministry!

    • Thanks a lot Bayo O. I am hoping that gospel artiste would take the this and make something wonderful out of it. God bless!
